Summarizing and Visualizing Day Lighting Data

In order to facilitate the presentation of a basic daylighting study focused on sun/shadow impact, we developed a method for organizing the results in a simple summary graphic diagram. The impact of an existing building on eight neighbor buildings was evaluated for the as-built condition in addition to a proposed new design condition. Each neighbor building was evaluated with respect to resulting shadow impact on its main facade. The evaluations were produced at 10 minute increments for a representative day for each month of the year.  The method that we developed for presenting the results enabled us to use one summary graphic diagram for each of the eight buildings. The summary graphic diagrams were keyed with underlying image data. The study was presented to a neighborhood community group to assist in understanding the impact of the proposed design condition.
